Artcurial was founded in 2002, just at the time the French auction market was opening up to competition, and quickly became the leading French auction house. Since then the firm has continually innovated, launching new specialties such as Design and Street Art, which are a major international success.
Today, as a multi-faceted auction house, Artcurial enjoys international recognition and has earned its place at the forefront of the art market. With sales taking place mainly in Paris, Monaco and Marrakech, the auction house will achieve a total sales volume of €216.5 million in 2022.
Conceived as a cultural venue, the passion for works of art and collectors’ items is expressed around a core of main specialities - from fine art to decorative art, collectors’ cars, jewellery, important clocks and watches, fine wines and spirits, etc., in fact more than 25 areas of expertise.
Artcurial is resolutely international in scope, extending its expertise beyond France and exporting its know-how abroad. The company has established offices in Brussels, Milan, Monaco, Marrakech, and Munich, as well as a presence in Beijing, Vienna and Spain, and occasional exhibitions in New York.
In 2017, the Artcurial group acquires one of the greatest actors in the world of luxury real-estate, John Taylor. With this acquisition, Artcurial develops its international position in the intermediation and sale of exceptional goods.

As a voluntary and judicial auctioneer, he is often the first point of contact for the House. His generalist training and legal skills make him a valuable advisor to all those who are considering adding value to their property or collections.
Stéphane Aubert is also at the origin of the immense success of the sales of furniture from Palaces and great Hotels: the Hôtel de Crillon for €6M, the Plaza Athénée for €1.4M (2013), the Hôtel de Paris in Monaco for €3.1M (2015), the famous restaurant of the Tour d'Argent (2016) and finally the Ritz Paris in 2018 and 2020 for more than €8M.
He has also made numerous discoveries or rediscoveries such as Rodin’s Andromeda sculpture in 2017 which sold for €3.5M and in 2019, the fabulous Joseph Altounian Collection which was auctioned for over €2M.
In 2020 and 2021, he orchestrated the successful sales of the Jeanne Moreau, Michou, Maurice Houdayer and Kenzo collections.

Matthieu Fournier joined Artcurial in 2005 as both a specialist and an auctioneer, and in 2007 created the department dedicated to Old Master & the 19th Century Art.
Having studied law, history and history of art, he joined Christie’s to develop his skills as an art expert, where he also trained as an auctioneer in the Inventory Department.

The dynamism and efficiency he has brought to his clientele of demanding collectors have enabled him to take Artcurial’s Old Masters Department from €1.5m of sales in 2007 to €23.9m of sales in 2019, establishing numerous records along the way and organising the sale of several prestigious private collections.
It was under his hammer that the Louis Grandchamp des Raux Collection was sold (€8.7m) in 2015 as well as the Fernand Lafarge Collection (€6.2m) in 2019. The success of Artcurial’s Old Master & 19th Century Art department owes much to trio formed by Matthieu Fournier and specialists Elisabeth Bastier and Matthias Ambroselli as well as the quality of catalogues they produce, highly appreciated by the international community of collectors, curators and connoisseurs.

He is a seasoned expert of both art and the art market and he has quietly developed a reputation as a key player and trusted adviser among collectors. His passion and his determination to unearth high quality works of art have enabled him to offer some truly exciting pieces.
Among his best sales have been a rediscovered painting by Lyonel Feininger which sold for €5,7m in May 2011 to an American connoisseur, Aristide Maillol’s La Rivière, reaching €6,1m in December 2013, a world record auction price for a work by this artist and Auguste Rodin’s magnificent sculpture Andromède which fetched €3,7m in May 2017.

Matthieu Lamoure has been running Artcurial Motorcars since 2010, when he took over Artucurial’s Classic Cars Department created by Hervé Poulain.

Son of art teachers, who passed on to him their taste for aesthetics, Matthieu became fascinated by the beauty of motorcars from a very early age. In 1996, after studies based on art, art appraisal and the art market, he started his career with Hervé Poulain.
In 2003 he joined Bonhams Europe in Geneva as a specialist, becoming Director - Europe three years later. He launched the famous English auction house’s automobile sales at the annual French classic car show, Retromobile, as well as overseeing auctions in Monaco, Gstaad and Reims.
Four years later Hervé Poulain, wanting to take a step back, offered Matthieu the opportunity to take over his Classic Cars Department at Artcurial. In 2010, accompanied by Pierre Novikoff and Iris Hummel, he took the wheel of this historic department, creating a completely new image with a revitalised communication strategy and renaming it Artcurial Motorcars; today it is the leader in its field in Continental Europe.
Through official auctions at Paris’s Retromobile and at the Le Mans Classic and classic car sales on the Champs Elysées in Paris and in Monaco, the department’s turnover rose from €6m in 2009 to nearly €80m in 2016. Matthieu has been entrusted with the sale of many historic collections, including the cars of HSH The Prince of Monaco in 2012, the Citroëns of André Trigano and the ‘Solo Alfa’ and Alain Prost collections. His sales have seen multiple world records broken, for example the 1957 Ferrari 335S from the Pierre Bardinon Collection, which fetched €32m, setting the record price for a car sold at auction (in Euros and Pounds). Discovering the Baillon Collection together with his colleague Pierre Novikoff, the biggest barn find of untouched classic cars in the last 50 years, remains one of his most unforgettable moments.

Olivier Berman began his career in the 1980s at the Galerie Gary-Roche, which had been founded by his grand-parents at the end of the 19th century. He contributed to the rediscovery of movements which were little known at the time, most notably Orientalism and Symbolism.

From 1994 he was the specialist in 19th century paintings for the Francis Briest auction house.
He joined Artcurial in 2008 to create and develop the Orientalism department which, since 2010, has been the leader in continental Europe. In 2011, just three years after his arrival, he achieved the world record for a work by Jacques Majorelle, which fetched 1,315,000 Euros.
By launching themed sales and travelling exhibitions in Morocco - Jacques Majorelle and his Contemporaries in 2011, Moroccan Spirit in 2014, A Moroccan Passion - The Pierre Bergé & Yves Saint Laurent Collection in 2015, Paris / Marrakech in 2016, Olivier has had a huge impact on the growth in interest in this specialist area, now much sought after by an international clientele, comprising both major collectors and museums.
He has also made a major contribution to the success of the Impressionist and Modern Art department, notably with the sale, in December 2013, of Gustave Caillebotte’s painting ‘Le Pont de l’Europe’ which fetched more than 1,800,000 Euros.

After a postgraduate degree in business law, Sabrina Dolla defended a thesis on the end of the auctioneers' monopoly in European competition law, which led her to discover this fascinating world.
In 2000, she started working at Tajan, then the leading French auction house, where she organized the first specialized Design sales in 2002.

In 2006, she joined François Tajan at Artcurial, where she was in charge of Art Deco sales, before taking over the management of the Art Deco / Design division in 2020. Her expertise and experience enable her to cover the entire century and to sell important furniture by Pierre Chareau, Eckart Muthesius, Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand and Jean Royère with remarkable results.
Thanks to a multidisciplinary team, the Design department now covers all areas of expertise in French and international design.

Martin Guesnet, half French half German, is passionate about contemporary art. For 10 years he was an actor with avant-garde theatre troops in Germany before switching to concentrate on the fine arts. From 1986 to 1997 he was Director of the Galerie Beaubourg, Paris/Vence, after which he managed the Karsten Greve gallery in Paris.

Between 2002 and 2014 he managed Artcurial’s Contemporary Art Department where, under his direction, several collections were sold, including those of Jean Bousquet, Daniel and Florence Guerlain and Micheline and Claude Renard, as well as Jean Pollack.
In 2012 he was made a Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
In 2014 Martin was appointed Director - Europe and is in charge of developing Artcurial’s European activities and co-ordinating the German, Austrian, Belgian and Italian offices.

Arnaud Oliveux, who holds a degree in civil law, developed a passion for contemporary art during his studies at the École du Louvre between 1996 and 2000, where he studied under Bernard Blistène, Christine Macel and Laurent Le Bon.

In 2003 he joined Artcurial’s contemporary art department and obtained his auctioneer qualification. In 2005 he became one of the company’s experts and in September 2008 he was appointed to oversee voluntary sales.
His interest in contemporary creation has led him to maintain close personal ties with artists. He was formerly Xavier Veilhan’s assistant for several years and contributed to the artist’s retrospective at Le Magasin in Grenoble in 2000.
Since 2006, he has been a pioneer in France in developing graffiti and urban art auctions.
His close relationships with artists have allowed him to organise auctions that take the shape of authentic events highlighting urban cultures through performances and gatherings with actors in the sector.
Today, Artcurial has become the leader in this niche market, which is now gaining international recognition, regularly setting records such as with Invader, Shepard Fairey, Vhils and Jose Parla.
In 2019, Arnaud Oliveux became associate director of the auction house and continues to develop this speciality under the name Urban & Pop Contemporary, with curated projects such as Outsider(s), A History of Beautiful Losers, Don’t Believe the Hype and Search & Stop.

In 2013, François Tajan chose her to lead the department of Important Watches. Three years later that initiative has resulted in a total of over 4.5 million euros in sales: a 60 % increase since the creation of the department.
In 2018, Marie Sanna-Legrand developed a unique and exclusive concept: Le Temps est Féminin, a sale devoted entirely to women’s timepieces. A great success, it achieved remarkable results, including a Bulgari Serpenti that sold for €436,600 including fees, and brought vintage watches from the 70s - including Piaget watches - back into fashion.
Assisted by an excellent team whose accessibility and professionalism are unfailing, the Watch Department has been entrusted with the sale of several important collections, including that of a racing car driver in 2016, the Schwartz Collection in 2018 and the Fondation Napoléon in 2019.
Over the past five years, under the direction of Marie Sanna-Legrand, the department of Important Watches has progressed significantly, becoming one of the major players on the market, and has earned the recognition and gained the confidence of watch lovers all over the world.

After several years at the Étude Briest, from 1988 to 1992, during which he played an active part in the art market and then in finance, in 2003 Hugues Sébilleau again joined Francis Briest at Artcurial’s Post-War & Contemporary department.

For 15 years, Hugues Sébilleau has developed several periods and movements, including Abstraction and the 70s, also expanding new markets and helping the department achieve remarkable results with artworks from 1945 to the present.
It is also worth noting that the oil on canvas painting 1.6.88 by Zao Wou-Ki sold for 3,518,600 € including buyer’s premium, and the acrylic on canvas painting Tabula, done in 1980 by Simon Hantaï, which was acquired for 753,000 € last June.
His analysis of the contemporary art market and its participants has also allowed Artcurial to offer renowned collections such as that of the Paris art merchant Jean Pollak in October 2011, and more recently the Michel Fedoroff collection in 2017, which allowed Artcurial to obtain the world’s record for a work by Martin Barré.

With a law degree, studies at the prestigious Louvre School of Art and as a graduate of the French National Institute of Gemmology, Julie Valade earned her stripes working alongside Jacques Tajan in the Art Deco Department, then in managing the Jewellery Department at Tajan auction house.

Having learned the art and science of appraisal with Chantal Beauvois, in 2005 she was asked by François Tajan to create the Jewellery and Watch and Clock Department for Artcurial.
In July 2006, the first Artcurial sale in Monaco sold, among other notable lots, a blue diamond for €1.4m.
For more than 10 years Julie, together with her team, has worked diligently in providing high quality services to sellers and buyers, setting record after record for pieces made by the greatest names in jewellery - Suzanne Belperron, Boivin, Van Cleef and Arpels, Cartier,etc., as well as for exceptional stones, such as the Van Cleef and Arpels ring set with a pear diamond weighing 16.87 carats which sold for €1.7m in 2014 or a Kashmir sapphire which sold for €900,000 in 2015.

Francis organises and manages the major Modern and Contemporary Art auctions as well as sales of prestigious collections, such as those of Jacques Damase, Ambroise Vollard, Henri Potez, Maurice Raynal, Henriette and André Gomès, Jacques and Madeleine Matarasso, Henri Cachin, Louis Carré, Perrot-Moore, Geneviève Laporte, Alice Teriade, Gerard Oury, Dina Vierny, Pierre Hebey and Jean Leymarie, as well as the Brollo de Giacometti collection.
Many exceptional pieces have reached record prices under his hammer: among the sculptures were an Alexander Calder Mobile (3.1 million Euros), Aristide Maillol’s La Rivière (6.2 million Euros) and Rodin’s Andromède (nearly 3.7 million Euros). Among the paintings were Nicolas de Staël’s Nu Couché (7 million Euros), Jean-Michel Basquiat’s small Santo (2.6 million Euros), Salvador Dali’s The Sewing Machine (1.8 million Euros), a composition by Zao Wou Ki (1.5 million Euros) and Lyonel Feininger’s Hafen von Swinemunde (5.7 million Euros).
He sits on the Board of Admistrators of both the Maillol Museum and the Association of Friends of Jean Dubuffet as well as Chairman of the Friends of the Donjon de Vez, a listed historic site where he organises sculpture exhibitions - Calder, Dubuffet, Miro, American sculpture, Giacometti, Lee Ufan, etc.
Since 2012 he has been Chairman of the endowment funds of Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport’s Espaces Musées, whose purpose is to promote French artistic heritage to an international audience. Exhibitions are organised in partnership with major Parisian cultural institutions such as the Rodin Museum, the Picasso Museum Paris, etc.
Lastly, Francis founded the Artcurial Cultural Agency, which offers tailor-made solutions for the design and setting up of cultural and artistic activities. This cultural consulting service is intended primarily for companies, foundations and institutions wishing to strengthen the cultural identity of a place or location, establish a long-term culture policy, organise a cultural event or create a heritage site.

Serge Lemoine is a French art historian. He has shared his time between university teaching and managing the Museum of Grenoble and Paris’s Musée d’Orsay.

He has taught at the University of Dijon in Burgundy, the School of Art at the Louvre in Paris - where he was the first to hold the chair of XIXth century art - and at the Sorbonne, where he is Professor Emeritus. As a specialist in the XIXth century, in Puvis de Chavannes, in Les Nabis and in Jean-Paul Laurens and constructivist art of the XXth century, in Dadaism and in Purism, he has published many works and organised many exhibitions on these themes, including photography and design.
He has curated major exhibitions on the beginnings of modern art from the XIXth and XXth centuries - The Mountain Sentiment and Signac and Colour at the Museum of Grenoble, Towards Modern Art: from Puvis de Chavannes to Matisse and Picasso at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice and The Origins of Abstraction - Neo-impressionism from Seurat to Paul Klee at Musée d’Orsay.
He has organised many artist-themed exhibitions, both in France and internationally, notably at the Museum of Grenoble - Jan Schoonhoven, Richard-Paul Lohse, Helmut Federle, Fischli and Weiss, Christian Boltanski, Annette Messager, Imi Knoebel, Rebecca Horn, César Domela and François Morellet; in Paris at the Pompidou Centre - Kurt Schwitters, at the Musée d’Orsay - Maurice Denis, Ferdinand Hodler and Lovis Corinth, at the Grand Palais - Klimt, Schiele, Moser and Kokoschka and at the French Cinémathèque - Renoir Renoir; at the National Art Center of Tokyo - The Art of Monet and its posterity.
He organised the François Morellet retrospective at the Pompidou Centre and, in 2013, the exhibition Dynamo - a century of light and movement in art 1913 - 2013 at the Grand Palais in Paris.
Serge is also the author of numerous books and essays, notably on Piet Mondrian and De Stijl, François Morrelet, Aurelie Nemours, Auguste Herbin, Carmen Herrera, Alberto Biasi, Antonio Calderara, Piero Dorazio, Lars-Gunnar Nordström, Mario Ballocco and many other artists.
He is publishing with Faton Publishers The Writings of Jacques Thullier, five volumes of which have already been released.

Mad about beauty and speed, amateur pilot and art professional, he invented the concept of Art Cars by asking Modern Artists (Calder, Stella, Lichtenstein, Warhol, Arman, César, Wolinski) to paint the cars he piloted during Le Mans 24 Hour race. Amongst his eleven entries between 1975 and 1998 ‘the fastest auctioneer in the world’ finished the endurance race six times with his best result a victory in his class with a BMW 2L in 1977 and 6th overall in a BMW M1 in 1979.
Hervé Poulain has organised motorcar sales in France since 1974 at a rate of four to six per year. In 2002 he co-founded the auction house Artcurial and became President of Honour in 2015. In 2010, anxious to sustain the Motorcars department he convinced Matthieu Lamoure and Pierre Novikoff to leave an Anglo-Saxon auction house and much to his great delight they agreed to take over the reins at Artcurial. Better than any trio, they are a triumvirat! The three compères breathe a unique ambiance into their department and auctions thanks to their knowledge, unique spirit, authority and enthusiasm.
