The December Online Only sale of the Fine Wine & Spirits department, divided into two sessions, from 5th to 12nd December and from 6th to 13th December, will offer more than 1,000 lots for auction. Enough to please yourself or others and celebrate the end of the year!
A fine vertical of 68 bottles of Château Mouton Rothschild, starting in 1918 and ending in 2010, is offered for sale (lots 214 to 321). The Château was classified as a 2nd Grand Cru in 1855 and then, in 1973, it was exceptionally and uniquely reclassified as a 1st Grand Cru.
While Château Mouton Rothschild has attracted the interest of wine lovers for its intrinsic qualities, it also owes its reputation to its singular approach to labels. This story began with a trial in 1924, when Nathaniel de Rothschild decided to entrust the famous poster artist Jean Carlu with the design of a new label. It was mainly from 1945 onwards that the tradition was established: a different label is created each year. The greatest contemporary artists have been called upon: Jean Cocteau (1947), Marie Laurencin (1948), Georges Braque (1955), Salvador Dali (1958), Georges Mathieu (1961), César (1967), Juan Miro (1969), Marc Chagall (1970), Pierre Soulages (1976), Arman (1981), Francis Bacon (1990). More recently, Château Mouton Rothschild has called on Jeff Koons (2010) and Annette Messager (2017).
The catalogue includes 130 lots of red Burgundies, from lot 377 to lot 506. The featured vineyards are as prestigious as they are delicious.
Wines from the Rhône Valley are also represented with 198 lots from some of the most prestigious producers and vineyards: René Rostaing, Paul Jaboulet Ainé, Paul Avril, Château Rayas, Château de Fonsalette, Pignan, Domaine du Pégau.
We offer 36 lots of red Hermitage from Jean Louis Chave, from 1993 to 2018 (lots 775 to 810), and 42 vintages of Côte Rôtie La Landonne from Guigal (lots 713 to 754), from 1978 to 2017.
Côte Rôtie La Landonne, 100% Syrah, is a powerful and concentrated wine, aged in new barrels for 40 months. It is a wine for long ageing, like the prestigious La Mouline and La Turque wines from the same estate.
Among the jewels of this sale is a magnificent collection of 38 lots of red and white Jura wines from Domaine Ganevat. All the grape varieties of the estate will be presented, with 23 different cuvées: Chardonnay (lots 877 to 892), Pinot Noir (lots 893 and 894), Poulsard (lots 895 to 898), Savagnin (lots 899 to 914) and Trousseau (lot 915). Long ageing methods, 10 years for the Savagnin of the cuvée des Vignes de mon Père, ageing in jars and low yields make this daring winemaker one of the best in France. Thanks to him, the wines of the Jura are known throughout the world.
The sale ends with an exceptional lot. A bottle of very prestigious spirits: a bottle of Chivas Royal Salute Tribute to Honour Whisky. This is a 45-year-old blend in a 1-litre decanter, estimated at €170,000 - €180,000 (lot 1017, sold with recoverable VAT), produced in a limited edition of only 21. The porcelain decanter is decorated with diamonds and silver. The spectacular black porcelain bottle was made by the French firm Revol and enhanced by the London jeweller Garrard with 413 white and black diamonds set in silver and gold.
