The prestigious collection of Baron and Baroness Vaxelaire on sale at Artcurial
 

On 9^th November, the Old Master & 19^th Century Art department is organising a sale dedicated to the Baron & Baroness Vaxelaire Collection. This collection, which has remained in the family until the present day, pays tribute to this famous dynasty of Belgian entrepreneurs, creators of the Au Bon Marché department stores in Belgium, and bears witness to their great sensitivity to nature and its representations by major Flemish artists of the 16^th and 17^th centuries.

Love of nature, gardening, farming, agriculture and respect for the land are also in the veins of the Vaxelaires: the collection assembled by the grandson of the founder of the dynasty and his wife Nadine, made up of paintings by important Flemish artists of the 16^th and 17^th centuries, bears witness to their love for the rich Belgian countryside, the work in the fields, the landscapes changing with the seasons and the fruits of an abundant nature.

Among the artists of choice of Baron and Baroness Vaxelaire were Jacob and Abel Grimmer, father and son, both of whom were active in Antwerp at the same time as the Brueghels. It is exceptional to find such an important group of their works, which also include some extremely rare masterpieces, notably the Castle in a landscape with a shepherd, estimated at €80,000 - 120,000, and a very important suite of ten tondi by Abel Grimmer depicting the months of the year, from the Plantin-Moretus collection, estimated at €600,000 - 1,000,000. Their famous contemporary Pieter Brueghel the Younger is also represented by one of his most emblematic subjects, a Wedding Dance in the open air estimated at €200,000 - 300,000. Snowy landscapes and summer scenes by Beschey, van Uden, Ryckaert and Bredael also feature in the collection.

In parallel, a highly coherent set of 41 turquoise and harlequin enamelled biscuit objects from the Kangxi and 19^th century Qing dynasty will be offered in auction in the Asian Art sale on 6^th December. The Books sale on 8^th November will auction a selection of modern illustrated books in beautiful contemporary bindings.
