Seuls trois exemplaires de cette lampe sont répertoriés : un exemplaire dans la collection
de Paul Éluard et une paire dans celle d'Edward James, mécène anglais des surréalistes
dont notamment Salvador Dalí.

It was during a dinner in 1930 that Jean-Michel Frank met Salvador DalÍ at Charles and Marie-Laure de Noailles' place, who had just purchased "Le jeu lugubre" by the Catalan painter. So begins between Jean-Michel Frank and Salvador DalÍ a friendly and professional relationship which will lead the decorator to introduce Salvador DalÍ to his social and artistic Parisian circle (Alberto Giacometti, Emilio Terry, Elsa Schiaparelli, the baron Roland de l'Epée…)
This collaboration will give birth to the creation of few rare models of furniture and lighting, such as the "lips" sofa, some screens, a floor lamp with a twisted shaft and the plaster and wicker lamp presented in our sale.
This lamp is a perfect synthesis of the surrealist vision of DalÍ, with the use of a fisherman's trap and the "primitive" streamlining of shapes as well as the use of "poor" materials, dear to Jean-Michel Frank. We can even see here, in some ways, the influence of Alberto Giacometti.
Only three examples of this lamp are listed in the consulted literature (1): one in the collections of Paul Eluard and a pair in the collection of the English patron of the surrealists, Edward James… for whom Salvador DalÍ will design his famous " lips " sofa.
This lamp, rare copies of which survived until today, is the result of the encounter of the surrealist artist's genius, guided by the artistic director's talent.
